Filesystem with chronological patches
This is a sort of useful idea that i am considering , suppose the "Theory of patches" used to develop the DARCS versioning system were incorporated into the filesystem like ReiserFS with the patches version corresponding to the ime and date the change was made , It would be a great leap for automatic archival retrieval system.
In simpler terms suppose i am writing a 400 page novel ( like Bourne identity ..:) ) and as the author i decide to change the final climax to something better .. ,If i have the automatic archiving capability in the filesystem i will be able to go to a particular date on which i sarted on the current plot and rewrite the new plot and i can save both branches and send it for consideration to my publisher ... he choose the plot that he likes best ...
Amazing what a simple change can do ... !!!!! the thing is it should be transparent and having a rock solid recovery system like reiserfs sould be great ...

Why would the filesystem need versioning for this? Versioning the document should be enough. Binary file versioning could help in recovering files individually unlike what a filesystem journal offers. Ever heard of cvsfs? Look here for the sourceforge project page. That should potentially achieve what you are asking for.

Theoretically what you say is true .. but lets face it who in the windows world really knows about cvsfs and even reiserfs , the first step to really make a cross platform filesystem will be reliability and reiserFS is reliable enough to me even in default parameters but do you say anybody using it say in portable USB drives no .. even i have to use NTFS for that because i might have to connect to a windows machine in a emergency to access my files ...
Also a lot of people may not know how to use a CVS application and we can provide a seamless interface into explorer and KDE file manager , we can keep versioning as a optional feature turn it on for your word document or some speciic file ...
All this i feel has the making's of a true crossplatform filesystem although we need not promote it as such ...
@ windows user .. reliable filesystem with recovery and versioning
@ linux user .. already he knows reiserfs is reliable he gets versioning and more importantly cross platform support for his filesystem ..
